Mirrormask

"Mirrormask" is out on DVD this week and is well worth a look. The story is a murky version of the ususal lost-in-a-magic-land-and-have-to-find-the-way-home a la "Alice in Wonderland"/"Wizard of Oz"/"Phantom Tollbooth" but the visuals by the Henson company are truly stunning and fabulously imaginative. Here's a sample.

These are great images. Why don't critics pay more attention to the art direction of movies? It is such a significant part of the overall tone and aesthetics of the film. I note that the Society of Illustrators in NY currently has some lovely paintings on display from the recent robot animated film. These deserve wider recognition.
